Travel Cartoons

My idea of a good time

is to start walking or biking and keep going for months. I’ve bicycled across the United States, hiked from Mexico to Canada on the Pacific Crest Trail and walked across Spain on the Camino de Santiago. And after I get home, catch my breath, and make myself a salad, a steak and a martini, I’m always ready to do it again.

These trips are the purest ways I’ve found to be myself, which makes them superlative times to draw. Travel Cartoons are drawings I’ve done while traveling, and they are about reacting to the moment I’m in. They’re also about exploring the impulse both for travel and for drawing and I use them to inform my teaching. Below are examples of this work.

The Pacific crest Trail

In 2018 I through-hiked the Pacific Crest Trail for 5½ months with my husband. Somedays I’ve contemplated buying a plane ticket and starting the whole thing again.

France and Spain

This trip was not hiking or biking, but just being a tourist. The drawings I felt compelled to make were much calmer during this less physically demanding trip.
